fran

Having worked as a professional photographer since 2004 Fran is passionate about documenting the world around us. Growing up on the edge of the countryside meant that, from an early age, Fran was inspired to record what she saw.

What began with detailed drawings of flowers and trees evolved when her photographic interest was kindled by her grandfather in her teenage years. Going on to complete a degree in fine art, Fran studied not only formal aspects of composition and lighting but also the effects of sensory perception and how we process visual information. This is where Fran’s obsession with light, and its ability to influence emotion, began.

Fran’s first book “The Peak District” explored the history and environment of the UK’s first National Park and cemented her reputation not only as a photographer but also as a writer on landscape studies. Her research into the richly varied geology and fascinating landscape myths of Britain and Ireland led to the publication of her third book “Shore to Summit” - a recommended text for anyone who wishes to know more about ‘reading’ landforms. This academic interest led Fran undertake an MA in landscape architecture where she deepened her understanding of both ecological processes and the often complex aesthetic responses to natural and designed environments.

As a regular contributor of articles to leading photographic magazines Fran is known for her holistic approach, being equally at home producing guides to camera technique as writing about interpreting the landscape’s character or explaining the interaction between weather and lighting. This broad knowledge base, combined with many years experience as a photographic tutor, makes Fran an invaluable guide to what to photograph, where and when to find it, and how best to record it.
